Overview

## What an emergency lockout call-out actually involves

An emergency lockout is any situation where the door is shut, the lock is working, and you are on the wrong side of it. Keys left inside on the kitchen worktop, a snapped key in a Yale, a door that slammed behind you while you took the bins out, a tenant who never returned a set, a night latch that has dropped and will not release. Every one of those is a job we handle several times a day across London.

Our approach is non-destructive entry wherever the lock allows it: picking, bypassing or manipulating the mechanism so the door opens and your existing cylinder keeps working afterwards. That is not a marketing line, it is the cheapest outcome for you — no new cylinder, no new handle set, no joinery. Where a lock is already damaged, seized or of a type that cannot be picked safely, we will tell you that on the phone before we set off, and we will tell you what the replacement part costs.

Professional help matters here because doors are far more expensive than locks. A uPVC door with a multipoint mechanism can be opened in minutes by someone who knows the gearbox, or destroyed in minutes by someone levering it with a screwdriver. The Bow Locks has been doing this for 25 years and is the only London locksmith company contracted to major letting agents and property maintenance firms — the kind of work where damaging a door in an occupied building is simply not an option.

### Who this is for

- Homeowners and tenants locked out of a flat, house or maisonette
- Shops, offices and commercial premises that cannot open for trade
- Letting agents, property managers and landlords needing access to a unit
- Anyone with keys lost, stolen or left behind at another address

## What it costs when a lockout is handled the wrong way

The damage in a lockout is almost never caused by the lock. It is caused by the twenty minutes before the locksmith arrives. Shouldering a uPVC door bends the slab and pulls the hinges out of alignment, so even once you are inside the door will not close properly and the multipoint will not throw. That turns a £48 entry into a door repair, a new gearbox, or in the worst cases a replacement door.

Waiting also has a cost. A ground-floor window left open as a way back in is an open invitation, and a front door that has been forced is not secure overnight. If keys were lost rather than left inside, the risk is different but larger: anyone who finds them and knows the address has a working key until the cylinder is changed.

Cost escalation is easy to picture. Non-destructive entry is the cheapest line on our price list. Drilling and replacing a cylinder costs more. Repairing a levered frame, realigning a door and fitting a new multipoint costs several times that. The order of those numbers never changes, which is why the first call matters more than anything else you do.

### Common mistakes

- Forcing, kicking or levering the door instead of calling — the single most expensive mistake in a lockout
- Using a card on a modern night latch, which usually just damages the latch bolt and the frame keep
- Climbing in through a window or from a balcony — we attend falls-related jobs every year
- Booking whoever answers first with no price given until the van is outside your door
- Leaving a lost-key lockout without changing the cylinder, so a working key is still out there

Our process

## Five steps, priced before we start

01

### Call and describe the door

A locksmith answers, not a call centre. Tell us the door type — timber, uPVC, composite, aluminium shopfront — and what the lock looks like. We give you a price and a realistic arrival time before you commit to anything.

02

### Attendance, typically within 30 minutes

We work out of E16 and cover London day and night, 365 days a year. You get told who is coming. Every locksmith on the team is City & Guilds qualified and DBS-checked, which matters when you are letting a stranger into your home at 3am.

03

### Proof of entitlement and inspection

We confirm you are entitled to enter the property, then inspect the lock, the door and the frame. That inspection decides the method — and often finds the real fault, such as a dropped door or a failing gearbox that caused the lockout in the first place.

04

### Non-destructive entry, then testing

We open the door using picking, bypass or manipulation wherever the lock allows. Once you are inside, the lock is tested from both sides, with the door open and closed, so you are not left with a mechanism that only works when the door is ajar.

05

### Sign-off, warranty and keys handed over

You get every key that works the lock, a clear price with no surprise additions, and our 3-year warranty on the work and the locks we fitted. All payment types are accepted at the door.

What you get

## Concrete outcomes, not adjectives

### Speed that is measured, not promised

A typical 30-minute response across London, from a team based in E16 that works nights, weekends and bank holidays at the same standard.

### Your existing lock survives

Non-destructive entry wherever the mechanism allows it means no new cylinder to buy and no keys to reissue to everyone in the household.

### The door survives too

Opening a multipoint uPVC door correctly protects the slab, the frame and the hinges — the parts that are genuinely expensive to put right.

### Priced before we travel

From £48, quoted on the phone. All payment types accepted, so nobody is walking to a cash machine at midnight.

### Safe to let in

City & Guilds qualified, DBS-checked locksmiths — the same team major letting agents and property maintenance companies use in occupied buildings.

### Secure when we leave

If a lock has failed or keys are missing, we can change or upgrade it on the same visit, covered by our 3-year warranty.

In detail

## Lockout methods, door types and London specifics

### Night latches, rim cylinders and slammed doors

The classic London lockout is a Yale-type night latch on a timber door in a converted flat. These are rim cylinders mounted on the inside face of the door with a latch that engages automatically when the door closes. Because they self-lock, they account for more accidental lockouts than every other lock type combined.

Most night latches can be opened non-destructively by picking the rim cylinder or by bypassing the latch, leaving the lock fully serviceable. Where a night latch has been double-locked with a key from outside, or where the deadlocking snib has been thrown, the approach changes and we will explain the options and the cost before starting work.

### uPVC and composite doors with multipoint mechanisms

uPVC and composite doors use a multipoint mechanism: a central gearbox driving hooks, rollers or deadbolts up and down the length of the door, operated by a euro cylinder. Opening one is a matter of manipulating that cylinder, not attacking the door. Euro cylinders can usually be picked; where they cannot, a controlled cylinder replacement gets you in without touching the mechanism or the frame.

Very often the lockout is a symptom. If the door has to be lifted, leaned on or slammed before the key will turn, the mechanism is already under strain and the gearbox is on borrowed time. We will tell you if that is what we find, because a gearbox replaced on a planned visit costs a fraction of one replaced at 2am when it finally seizes with you outside.

### Mortice locks, British Standard deadlocks and older stock

Older London housing stock — Victorian and Edwardian terraces, mansion blocks, ex-local-authority flats — commonly pairs a night latch with a mortice deadlock buried in the edge of the door. Five-lever British Standard deadlocks are deliberately harder to defeat, which is exactly what you want against a burglar and exactly what makes a lockout slower.

These are still routinely opened without damage by a locksmith who understands lever locks and curtains. Where a lock is worn beyond safe manipulation, replacement with a current British Standard five-lever deadlock is the right answer, and it upgrades your security and your insurance position at the same time.

### Residential versus commercial lockouts

Domestic lockouts are about getting a household back indoors quickly and cheaply. Commercial lockouts are about lost trading hours. A shopfront that will not open at 8am is losing money by the minute, and aluminium shopfront doors, roller shutters, panic hardware and mortice hook locks all behave differently to a domestic front door.

We work on both, and we do not touch vehicles — all of our time goes into premises, which is why the team knows door hardware in this much depth. For managed portfolios we handle access for letting agents, property managers and evictions, where documented entitlement to enter and a properly secured door afterwards are as important as the entry itself.

Questions

## Emergency lockouts in London — your questions answered

### How much does an emergency locksmith cost in London?

Our prices start at £48. The final figure depends on the lock, the door and whether any parts are needed, and we tell you that number on the phone before we travel — not after we arrive. All payment types are accepted.

### How quickly can you get to me?

Typically around 30 minutes across London. We are based in E16 and cover the capital 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so nights, weekends and bank holidays are handled by the same team.

### Will you have to drill my lock?

Usually not. We open non-destructively wherever the mechanism allows it, so your existing lock and keys keep working. Drilling is a last resort for locks that are already damaged, seized or cannot be picked safely — and we tell you the cost of the replacement cylinder first.

### Do you need proof that I live there?

Yes. We will ask you to demonstrate entitlement to enter the property — ID with the address, a tenancy agreement, post, or confirmation from a landlord or managing agent. It is the same check that protects your home when someone else claims it is theirs.

### I have lost my keys rather than locked them inside. What now?

Getting in is only half the job. If keys are lost or stolen and the address is identifiable, the cylinder should be changed so the missing key stops working. We can do both on the same visit, with the new locks covered by our 3-year warranty.

### Can you get into a uPVC door without breaking it?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. uPVC doors are opened through the euro cylinder rather than by attacking the door. What damages uPVC doors is force applied before we arrive, which is why the first thing we ask is that nobody tries to shoulder it.

### Are you qualified and vetted?

Our locksmiths are City & Guilds qualified and DBS-checked. We are the only locksmith company in London contracted to major letting agents and property maintenance companies, which requires that standard of vetting as a condition of the work.

### Do you cover my area?

We cover London as a whole from our E16 base, including Bow, Canary Wharf, Islington, Chelsea, Battersea, Brixton, Tooting, Croydon and Notting Hill. If you are in Greater London, call and we will give you an arrival time before you decide.

### How long does the job take once you arrive?

Most non-destructive entries take minutes rather than hours. If a lock needs replacing or a mechanism has failed, expect to be inside quickly and fully secure again within the same visit — we carry the common cylinders and night latches on the van.
