The latch cycles constantly, the closer drags, and the keeping plate slowly works loose in old timber. Repairs sit in the awkward space between leaseholders and freeholder, so they get postponed until the door stops locking altogether. Handled properly, this is straightforward: service or replace the communal mechanism, correct the closer and strike, and move to a restricted key profile so copies stop appearing without authorisation. Flat doors keep their own independent cylinders throughout. ### Stucco terraces, tall doors and seasonal movement The large timber doors typical of W11 terraces are heavy, and heavy doors drop. As hinges wear, the door sits low against the frame, the mortice bolt no longer aligns with its keep, and the key needs force. Damp West London winters make it worse as the timber swells.
